The Department of Patient Care Services (Nursing) is a major component of the medical center. FHMC nurses deliver the highest quality patient care in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary health care team. They care for patients in various areas of medical specialty including geriatrics, medical/surgical, critical care, perioperative, maternal child health, pediatrics, oncology, hemodialysis chemical dependency and psychiatry.

The vice president and director of nursing for patient care services are responsible for the quality of nursing services across the continuum of care.

The assistant directors of nursing, who report to the director of nursing, are responsible for selected services within the department.

Nurse managers have 24-hour accountability for their patient care units.

The assistant director of nursing education and staff development coordinates all activities relating to the professional development of nursing staff members. This includes the orientation of new employees as well as ongoing educational activities offered to both the staff and the community.

The department also employs head nurses and assistant head nurses, registered professional nurses (RNs) licensed practical nurses (LPNs), technicians, nursing attendants, and ward clerks, all of whom participate in the provision of quality care.

The administrative supervisors on the evening and night shifts are responsible for various administrative functions within the medical center.
