Founded in 1884, Flushing Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) is Queens’ first hospital. The hospital today is a 293-bed not-for-profit teaching facility located in one of the most ethnically diverse and prosperous populations in all of the U.S., the Flushing community.
-
In August 1999, doctors at FHMC discovered a cluster of patients with similar symptoms and sounded the alarm about the outbreak, to later become known as West Nile Encephalitis. Their detective work enabled city officials to launch a massive public awareness campaign and prevent further outbreaks.
-
FHMC operates a full service, fully renovated and expanded Emergency Department that consists of separate adult and pediatric units, and is a 911 receiving station for EMS. In 2007, approximately 40,000 patients were treated in FHMC’s Emergency Department.
-
Flushing Hospital Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry offers a wide array of mental health and addiction services to the community, including a 19-bed Acute Care Inpatient Unit, a 30-bed Chemical Dependency Unit, an Outpatient Mental Health clinic, the “Reflections Chemical Dependency” clinic, and Asian and South Asian Behavioral programs, as well as a Spanish speaking program.
-
The MediSys Health Network, including Flushing, Jamaica, and Brookdale Hospitals, has been designated as one of only four centers of Bioterrorism Preparedness in New York City. This positions the network as a leader in this field.
-
Flushing Hospital Medical Center’s State Designated Stroke Center has been established to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment- from arrival time to discharge- for patients who have suffered a “brain attack.”
-
FHMC’s on-site Ambulatory Care Center has over 40 general and specialty clinics, including Internal and Pediatric Medicine, Ophthalmology, Podiatry, OB/GYN, Dentistry, and Mental Health. With evening and weekend hours, Flushing Hospital was able to treat about 50,000 Ambulatory Care patients in 2007.
-
FHMC is home to Queens’ only patient Geriatric Medical Unit. This 30-bed unit serves the many needs of the older adult community by providing patients with highly qualified geriatric specialists. Flushing’s newly expanded Wound Care Center is now a six-bed outpatient center designed to treat and heal patients in need of wound care. The center provides specialized treatment for chronic or non-healing wounds and helps patients heal quicker, avoid amputation, and improve their overall quality of life.
-
In 2007, FHMC’s Department of OG/GYN performed approximately 2,150 deliveries. With eight ultra- modern and spacious Labor Delivery & Recovery suites, Flushing Hospital is committed to providing expecting mothers with the most positive birthing experience. Flushing Hospital has also established a Centering Pregnancy Program, a new type of prenatal care that allows expecting mothers to receive group care with other pregnant women.
-
Flushing Hospital recently expanded its Cardiology Department to provide enhanced inpatient and outpatient testing. Through the addition of state-of the art equipment and additional staff, the cardiology department now provides a wider variety of services and advanced testing with better diagnosis and quicker results for both the inpatient and outpatient care.
