Dear Applicant:
In reply to your request, I would like to take this opportunity to familiarize you with our program, in existence since 1948.
The hospital is situated in north Queens a multi ethnic largely middle class area. A central feature of our curriculum is continuity of care in a primary care setting. Emphasis is placed on continuity of care in a primary care setting, both in an ambulatory and inpatient setting. This is designed to prepare the resident for a practice as a generalist in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Over the past three years 80% of our residents have gone into private practice of Ob/Gyn incorporating in their practice, primary and preventive care of women. The breadth of the experience in our program accounts for the high success rate in passing the Board examinations and enables our graduates to pursue any subspecialty tract in Ob/Gyn.
The availability of our full time subspecialists results in a clinical experience for our residents that is extraordinary. This is reflected in the variety and number of radical hysterectomies, tubal and endocrine surgery and advanced pelviscopic surgery performed by our residents in addition to our Level III Obstetrics and Neonatology.
Much of the case management in the subspecialties during the third and fourth year is comparable to that of Fellowship levels at other institutions. Those completing the program are assured of attaining full competency in the specialty.
Total obstetrical deliveries last year were approximately 2200 and gynecological cases were 1338. One Physician Assistant and two transitional residents are part of the Ob/Gyn team, thus allowing the residents time for conferences and seminars . One full day a week is reserved for formal classroom instruction, and the residents are excused from all but emergency call while attending didactic sessions and conferences that day.
Please do not hesitate to contact the office of the chairman if you have any questions. Our telephone number is (718) 670-5440.
Very truly yours,
Allan J. Jacobs, M.D.
